[Dutch, CMO's Office]
The Ktarian physician was sitting at his desk going over paperwork.
Through the transparent aluminum window of his office he could see the main ward bathed in the soft glow of the overhead lights. Docked at Starbase 501 the Victoria's primary systems had been placed on standby and, as a result, lighting had been reduced in most areas including the Infirmary.
He was working on a data PADD that was synced to his workstation. As he made entries on the PADD his work showed up on the desktop monitor and was entered into the records. He was going over personal records. Normally he would have done this work in private but, he'd placed his entire staff on leave, he didn't expect any of them to come wandering in.
Dutch was putting Keval in for a promotion to Lieutenant JG. It was long overdue. His work with Elissa Harrtt would have been enough to warrant it but since that time she'd stepped up and become a much more key figure in the department. With the loss of V'tora his dependence on the Mizarian was only likely to increase and so the promotion was needed to reinforce her seniority over the more junior members of the department.
Similarly Loki Tevarra had a recommended promotion in his file. The Emergency Medical Technician had come a long way from the rebellious young Ventaxian Dutch had met when he'd first come onboard. Chuckling, Dutch recalled how the young man had once lost his Antarian Marsupial. The Loki he knew now was a far more dependable person, as evidenced by the work he'd done in multiple critical situations, and Dutch wanted to see the man recognized for it.
In addition he was elevating Ensign Zaina Kari to Chief Nurse. Although this was largely a change of title, and not an actual promotion, Dutch felt it worth noting in the record. The young woman had been a valuable addition to his staff and he was looking forward to seeing how she embraced the enhanced role.
Transmitting the recommended promotions to the new Executive Officer Dutch changed gears and began to review incoming personnel files. There were a few positions open on his staff. With the loss of V'tora there was one more. Dutch had signaled ahead for the local Starfleet Personnel Director to put together a short list of possible candidates and he was now slowly digging through the files the Director had put together for him.
Some were intriguing. Others were immediately rejected for a variety of reasons - a history of bar fights for one medical technician, a severe allergy to Caitian fur for one lab tech (there were four Caitians aboard Victoria), and a history of transporter psychosis for another. It seemed for every worthy record he came across there was three that were outright no's.
Dutch sighed, rubbed at the bridge of his nose, and pushed on. With a staff as small as his open positions couldn't be allowed to stay open very long or his staff members would start to feel the burden. He knew not a one of them would complain - but the hallmark of a good administrator was to never let it get that far.
