Re: Writer of the Year

October 11, 2013 10:02PM
Yes, I am a fan of sci-fi and it is always a sore spot when they have crappy science and just lean on the fiction. That is one of the things I always liked about Star Trek as a general rule. They tend to have a higher level of actual scientific theory involved in the basis of their writing. I have done a great deal of reading about the science used in the writing of Star Trek and although it is one of the best for it, they still have major "fudge-factor" in their writing where the scientists in the crowd can only shrug and nod.

Once upon a time, about 30 years ago, I got into war game design. We all play games, but tend to make up "house rules" for monopoly, or leave out or lean down some of the rules we don't entirely like. We started taking it a step further. We took a board from one game, pieces from another and then patched together rules from various games we liked that eventually gave us what we had wished they had put together in the first place. One gam in particular now no longer looks anything like the original smattering of hodge-podge and now has a validated life of its own that has been played by tournament level players with impressive results.

I told you that to make a point that I do the same thing with my writing. I steal fragments of ideas, as all writers do, from other stories, songs, real life moments and moments of inspiration and turn them into stories that we wish had been written. I try to make them into something I would want to read. I grew up on Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Night Gallery, One Step Beyond and many others. I like Stephen King and a story that grabs you, sometimes slaps you across the face and maybe sneaks up on you when you aren't looking. I like a story that makes my pulse quicken, I don't want to put it down, I'm anxious to read what happens next and if I'm really lucky, it might scare the shit out of me. My goal is to ultimately try and be a good story teller and do that when I write as well.

Once upon a time I wrote to teach others. I taught about creating depth of character. You should need to know how to make them believable, make the reader connect and care, to feel invested in the plot and so on. You create not only depth, but plan ahead enough to be able to drop hints and bread crumbs along the way that when you drop the bomb at some point, the reader does a face palm and realizes they should have seen it coming all along, even though they didn't. Now I'm a bit more laid back and I just write. I don't feel I have the time a crew deserves for me to be a CO/SM and do it right. I still nudge people once in a while, but I no longer set out trying to train writers...I just write what tickles my fancy that day.
